HYVARINEN SCORES OT WINNER FOR NO. 7 THUNDERWOLVES IN SEMIFINAL OPENER
The series now moves to Thunder Bay, Ont. for game two this Friday at the Fort William Gardens arena. Game three, if necessary will take place on Saturday in Thunder Bay, Ont. Both games will get underway at 7:30 p.m.
The Gryphons got on the board first and scored the lone first period goal on a delayed penalty. Guelph's Matt Lyall (Richmond Hill, Ont.) made a phenomenal play to get into the Lakehead zone then made a centering pass to Patrick Campbell (Sauble Beach, Ont.) who scored at 12:53 to give the Gryphons the 1-0 lead. Shots after the first period were 11-7 for Guelph.
Lakehead tied up the game early in the second period at the 2:30 minute mark. Dan Speer (Thunder Bay, Ont.) scored after hopping out of the penalty box on a boarding call, just in time to even the score on a wrist shot just inside the face off circle.
The Thunderwolves then took the 2-1 lead at the 14-minute mark, after Ryan McDonald (Prince Albert, Sask.) scored off the rush on the left side, tipping it up over the left shoulder of Gryphon netminder Scott Van Bommel (Norwich, Ont.). Shots after the second period were 21-14 in Guelph's favour.
In the third period, the Thunderwolves took an early two-goal lead. Matt Caria (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.), faked the shot and then put one between the legs of Gryphon Barrett Brook (Leduc, Alta.) to put the Thunderwolves ahead 3-1 with 9:31 minutes on the clock.
Down two goals, the Gryphons made their charge to get back into the game. Guelph scored on a power play to get back to within one goal (3-2). Defenseman Tim Priamo (Guelph, Ont.) notched his first goal of the post-season after a scramble in front of the net at 11:34 on the clock. Guelph then tied up the game, 3-all with five minutes left in regulation after Kris Belan (Florence, Ont.) knuckled the puck through the five-hole. Shots on goal after the third period were 33-22 for Guelph.
Gryphon backstop Scott VanBommel was faced with 23 shots in the contest, making great saves, while his counterpart Alex Dupuis (Thunder Bay, Ont.) saw 34 shots in the contest.
