PIONEER PETROLEUMS OUA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
HAMILTON, Ont. – The following student-athletes have been named Pioneer Petroleums Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week for the period ending November 21, 2010.
Each Pioneer Petroleums OUA Athlete of the Week will receive a $25 gift card and a dri-fit T-shirt, courtesy of Pioneer Petroleums.
MALE: Matt Abercrombie, Brock Badgers, Hockey
Abercrombie, a first year student-athlete, helped lead the Brock men's hockey team to two victories over the No. 2 ranked McGill Redmen and the No. 10 ranked Concordia Stingers. The Sarnia, Ont., native was in on six of the Badgers 10 goals registering two goals and four assists. In the Badgers 8-2 victory over Concordia, Abercrombie recorded five points adding two goals and three assists. He currently leads the Badgers and sits third in OUA rookie scoring with 16 points in 13 games.
FEMALE: Nicole Kesteris, Toronto Varsity Blues, Hockey
Kesteris, Toronto’s rookie goaltender, recorded 71 saves and one shutout to lead the Varsity Blues women’s hockey team to two big wins at home this weekend. The Aurora, Ont., native came up with a career-high 46 saves in a 3-1 upset victory over the No. 7 Windsor Lancers on Saturday afternoon. Kesteris stopped two early breakaway attempts to keep the game even and was named the Varsity Blues player of the game for her stellar performance. Kesteris followed that up with an impressive 2-0 shutout victory on Sunday versus the Western Mustangs. The first-year economics major made 26 saves, recorded her second career shutout and again came through in the clutch with a big breakaway save midway through the game. Kesteris is now ranked second in the province with an impressive 0.944 save percentage in eight games played.
