Western Mustangs @ UOIT Ridgebacks
Ryan Oliver scored his first OUA goal in overtime on Friday night as the UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team defeated Western 5-4 at the Campus Ice Centre.
The win was UOIT’s first of the year as they improve to 1-2-0. For Western, the loss to the Ridgebacks was their first this season, as they fall to 1-0-1. Western is sixth in the CIS national rankings.
Just over a minute into the extra frame, Oliver made a nice move past a Mustang defender just inside the blueline and blasted the puck by Western goalie Anthony Grieco for the game winner.
Kyle Wetering, Brendan Wise, Josh Vatri and Kevin George were the other UOIT goal scorers in the win. Oliver would finish with a goal and an assist while Ridgeback captain Nathan Spaling had two assists.
Jason Guy made 27 saves in his first win of the regular season. The Ridgebacks out shot Western 37-31.
Friday’s game against Western was a rematch of the 2010 OUA opening round of the playoffs.
Nipissing Lakers @ Ottawa Gee-Gees
First-year forward Luc Blain, Longeuil, Que., increased his seven point streak from last weekend to nine Friday night with a goal and an assist as the uOttawa Gee-Gees squeezed out a win against the Nipissing Lakers, 5-4 in a shootout.
“(Nipissing) battled hard,” said Blain, “but we got the win so that’s the most important thing.”
The Gee-Gees jumped to a healthy 4-0 lead in the first half of the game, with Blain starting things off with a power-play goal midway through the first period.
The next goal would come near the end of the period from first-year forward Steve Blunden, Ottawa, Ont. Knocked down in front of the net, Blunden would slide across the ice in a seated position, only to have the puck ricochet off his skate and into the back of the net, right through the blind spot of second-year Nipissing goalie Billy Stone, Foresters Falls, Ont.
First-year forward Matt White, Ottawa, Ont., and second-year defenseman Patrick Burns, Ottawa, Ont., would add a goal each in the second period.
However, the Lakers would force the Gee-Gees on their heels for the rest of the game, scoring four unanswered goals in the second and third periods, one coming from a two man advantage late in the last frame.
“The five-on-three goals are really tough not to give up,” said head coach Dave Leger, “but I was pleased with our special teams.”
After five minutes of four-on-four overtime solved nothing, the game went to a shootout with the Gee-Gees coming out on top thanks to goals by Blain and third-year forward Simren Sandhu, Calgary, Alta.
Third-year goalie Aaron Barton, Carlisle, Ont., was solid in net, stopping 31 of 35 shots, with 21 saves in the third period alone. Barton would also stymie two shootout attempts by Nipissing to help seal the deal for uOttawa.
Queen’s Gaels @ Toronto Varsity Blues
Brock Ouellet (Lindsay, Ont.) scored the winning goal for the Gaels in overtime and Scott Kenway (Calgary) added two in regulation as the Queen's Gaels (2-1-0) topped the Toronto Varsity Blues (0-1-2).
Queen's opened the scoring early in the first period on an unassisted effort by Kenway and took the lead into the first intermission.
Toronto capitalized early and often in the second period, however, as Michael Markovic and Robert Kay scored within five minutes of one another to take a 2-1 lead. The Gaels would tie up the frame a few minutes later on another unassisted goal from Colin Bergman (Calgary).
The third began with a fast pace and much scoring came as a result. Toronto opened the frame with a Shawn Frank goal roughly two minutes into the period. Queen's tied it up thirty seconds later as Jordan Mirwaldt (Winnipeg) scored on an assist from Payton Liske (Welland, Ont.). Ten seconds after that marker, Toronto pulled back into the lead on an unassisted goal from David Mooney. Markovic added his second power play tally of the night forty seconds after Mooney's goal to give Toronto the 5-3 lead.
After a slight lull in the scoring during the third, the Gaels brought the score back within one on Scott Kenway's second tally of the night. Kingston, Ontario's Ben Munroe followed Kenway's goal with one of his own thirty seconds later to tie the game for Queen's. The scoreline would stay unchanged for the remainder of the period and head into overtime tied at five.
The Gaels ensured that the extra frame didn't last very long as Ouellet scored five seconds into the period to win the game for Queen's.
In goal for the Gaels, David Aime (Clandeboyne, Man.) stopped 17 of 22 shots in the victory. Steele De Fazio (Georgetown, Ont.) would spell Aime in the third period and make six saves to pick up the victory.
Laurier Golden Hawks @ Waterloo Warriors
First year goaltender Justin Leclerc (Saskatoon, Sask.) picked up his first CIS win as the Warriors won the first edition of the 2010-11 battle of Waterloo 4-2 over the Laurier Golden Hawks.
Leclerc made 19 stops as he appeared calm and collected making timely saves. Waterloo picked up their third win of the season and second straight as part of Hockey Day in Waterloo at the Columbia Icefield Arena.
Veteran forward and role player Cory Fraser (Pictou, N.S.) opened the scoring just four minutes into the game sniping his first goal of the season past Laurier netminder Ryan Daniels. Fraser picked up the rebound off the shot of speedster Kyle MacDonald (Inverness, N.S.). Thomas Cardiff (London, Ont.) picked up the second assist.
Waterloo would take a 2-0 lead eight minutes later as Kirt Hill (Winnipeg, Man.) scored his second goal of the season. Jarrett Schnurr (Waterloo, Ont.) would add one of his two assists on the night. Following a Josh Schappert (Winnipeg, Man.) slashing penalty for the Warriors, Laurier cut the lead in half on the power play. Garrett Sinfield put home his first goal of the season with assists going to Phil Magistrale and Ryan Bellows.
Heading into the second period up 2-1, Waterloo would regain their two goal lead as Kurt Thorner (St. Thomas, Ont.) sniped his third of the season and now sits in fifth in OUA scoring with seven points. Assists were given to Schnurr and Steve Whitely (Petrolia, Ont.). The Hawks would not go away notching their second power play goal of the game as Ryan Bernardi put his second goal of the season past Leclerc.
Leclerc and the Warriors would settle down in the third stopping all seven shots to preserve the victory. Jarrett Schnurr would add an empty netter, his third point of the game and tenth on the young season. Schnurr (5g, 5a) now sits in first in OUA scoring tied with Luc Blain of Ottawa.
Lakehead Thunderwolves @ Windsor Lancers
The Lancer Men’s Hockey team dominated the visiting Lakehead Thunderwolves 5-1 in their home opener on Friday night at Windsor Arena.
With the win, the Lancers are now 1-2 on the season heading into game two of their doubleheader with the Thunderwolves on Saturday night. The puck is set to drop at 7:30pm at Windsor Arena.
Windsor opened the scoring five minutes into the first period with Brett Vandehogen’s first goal of the season.
Lancer goaltender Jim Watt held the Thunderwolves off the scoreboard for the remainder of the period, as the Lancers went into the break up 1-0.
Less than a minute into the second, the Thunderwolves headed to the box and Windsor wasted no time taking advantage. Captain Kyle Lang scored his first of the season on the power play to make it 2-0.
Watt continued to be outstanding in net as he turned aside 16 shots throughout the period to keep Windsor ahead.
Mike Lombardi scored his fourth of the season to round out the period to put Windsor up 3-0 heading into the third.
Again the Lancers started the period with a bang as Ryan Caicco gave Windsor a 4-0 lead just thirty-six seconds into the third.
The Thunderwolves were finally able to sneak one past Watt as they recorded their lone goal of the game on the power play just a few minutes later.
Windsor would seal the convincing victory one minute later as Scott Gillis scored the game’s final goal to give the Lancers the impressive 5-1 victory.
Watt made 37 saves on the night, as Lakehead outshot the Lancers 38-32.
RMC Paladins @ Ryerson Rams
The Ryerson Rams men's hockey team improved to 4-1-0 following a 4-2 victory over the Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins (0-3-1) on Saturday afternoon at George Bell Arena.
First-year Ryerson forward David Harris opened the scoring three minutes into the game with his second of the season. Justin Lacey would even the game for RMC a minute before the first intermission.
Ryerson would go ahead 3-1 on a pair of second period goals by rookies Jarrod Connolly and Frank Carbonaro.
The Rams went up 4-1 six minutes into the final frame on Greg Payne's third goal of the season. Landon Lavictoire would respond just over two minutes later to cut the lead in half but that is as close as RMC would get.
In his first start of the season, Ryerson's Louie George stopped 29 of 31 shots for the victory. Andrew Flemming made 36 saves in the loss for the Paladins. The Rams were 0-for-8 on the power play, while RMC was 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
Concordia Stingers @ Carleton Ravens
e Carleton University Ravens men’s hockey team came from behind in its home opener to earn a 4-3 victory over the Concordia University Stingers on Saturday.
Concordia grabbed the first goal of the game less than three minutes in after Daniel Michalsky (Aurora, Ont.) beat Ravens goalie Ryan Dube (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) on the powerplay.
The Ravens faced a forced substitution after Dube suffered an injury. Rookie Tyler Lush (Burlington, Ont.) stepped up to replace the netminder with a little more than seven to go before the end of the first.
Concordia’s second goal came shortly after when Stingers right wing Stefan Lutzenkirchen (Val d’Or, Que.) found the back of the net. With two minutes to go, the Ravens tried to get on the scoreboard when Joe Pleckaitis (Toronto) let go of a rocket but it rang off the post and the Stingers held on to a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.
The Stingers grabbed another early goal in the second when George Lovatsis (Markham, Ont.) capitalized on the man-advantage to give Concordia a 3-0 lead. But Carleton answered just minutes later when Joey Manley (Ottawa) beat Stingers goalie Maxime Joyal (Chateauguay, Que.) to begin the Ravens comeback.
First year forward Jeff Hayes (Ottawa) scored three unanswered goals less than five minutes apart to give Carleton the 4-3 lead.
The Ravens had a solid effort at both ends of the ice in the third and Lush finished strong in his first career game as a Raven, preventing the Stingers from tying the game. Concordia pulled Joyal in favour of the extra attacker late in the game but the Ravens held on for the victory.
