OUA M-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: GOLDEN HAWKS UPSET NO. 8 THUNDERWOLVES
The win gives Laurier a 17-7-3 record and 37 points, which is good for fourth place in the OUA West. Both Waterloo and Western won their games Friday evening putting them in first and second place with 41 and 40 points respectively. Lakehead falls to 18-7-2 and has 38 points.
Laurier opened the scoring in the game seven minutes in when Jordan Bonneville (St. Agatha, Ont.) drove the net and sent the puck out to a wide open Mike Gauthier (North Vancouver, B.C.) who wired it for his second of the season. Former Soo Greyhound Matt Caria (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) evened the match just two minutes later. The Thunderwolves out shot the Hawks 16-4 in the first period.
In the second Laurier again took the lead with a power play marker from Ryan Bernardi (Etobicoke, Ont.) who picked the corner from the blue line. Lakehead tied it up with a goal on the doorstep from Ryan McDonald (Prince Albert, Sask.). The Thunderwolves out shot the Hawks in the frame 15-7.
In the final period, the Golden Hawks Jason Bergeron (Ancaster, Ont.) scored at 6:44 for his eighth of the season. Laurier's Paul Bradley (Calgary) added the insurance marker after getting knocked down on his own blue line, Zack Shepley (Milton, Ont.) found him on a clearing attempt and he was away and made no mistake. It was Bradley's 20th marker of season which sets a net career high for him.
Laurier was only able to capitalize once in four opportunities with the man-advantage including 1:20 of a 5-on-3. Lakehead was shutout on the power play, going 0-for-4.
For the Thunderwolves, Kyle Moir (Calgary) stopped 18 or 22 shots on net for the loss.
